Advantages over other solutions
There are different methods for radiation prevention:
Shielded phone cases Radiation absorbing stickers (on earphone, side mount etc..) Antenna shields Shields of exotic and parapsichologial materials Shapes and styles of cellphones
Heavy, expensive, impractical Do not reduce radiation and do not solve the problem No breakthrough in radiation decrease

The only practical solution - radiation monitoring and alerting, since radiation level is not constant!

Rad-Alert eliminates 100% of the harmful radiation, without any degradation of performance.

Conclusion

Unlike all the others, Rad-Alert is a logical scientific solution to an industrial problem, that the industry could not afford to address.

Radiation level emitted from cellphones - Tutorial

Radiation levels of cellular phones are limited to SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) of 1.6 Watts/Kg. The SAR is measured by mathematical modeling or empirically by sampling the electric field strength INSIDE a model of a human head called
"Phantom".
The sampling is limited to the interior of the head (Phantom), which is filled with a fluid similar to human brain. Due to the conducting nature of the fluid and its considerable dimensions/weight, the electric field is weak, and the SAR criteria is met quite easily.
Most of the cellular phones on the market go through these tests or analysis, and report the results to the FCC and/or other regulation authorities, to receive certification.
The Phantom model does not take into account the intensity of the electric field or power density in the boundary level or skin, like the ear surface and tissue, the eyeball, the cheeks etc.
A large portion of the public does not understand the SAR concept, but “feels” the heat in the ear, face and eyes, during and after the use. The general concern is still hanging in mid air, with no definite conclusion on the thermal and non-thermal effects of electromagnetic radiation on human health (especially long term impact). Scientifically, there seems to be no proof of damages, but it’s too early to have final and conclusive results. On the other hand, the Phantom model assumes maximum power output from the cellular phone.
This is totally incorrect; the cellular phone is a sophisticated transceiver, which is totally “SLAVED” to the cellular infrastructure for obvious reasons.

The power output of the phone CHANGES dramatically (from several milliWatts to about 0.6 Watts), with radio conditions, in order to optimize the cellular network and increase the battery life.
CDMA phones need this feature as a must for proper network operation, while GSM and others use the power control feature to enhance the network, and decrease the interference between neighboring cells.
Another rather unknown fact is the accumulated nature of radiation, due to its thermal nature. Radiation needs several minutes for its energy to start warming an area or mass, so a short call, even with high transmission power, is unlike to produce substantial warming.
Because of these, it is striking that the cellular industry upto now, did not explain to the public that the chances of high radiation levels are low, and that a simple radiation warning can solve the problem entirely, by giving an alert proportional to radiation intensity and duration of call, which can be related to or ignored by the user.
It seems like the public’s concern and the cellular industry’s interests have to converge in this matter,as the safety issue is of utmost importance to both, the public and the industry’s future .
Since the relevance of the SAR figures are unclear and sometimes obscure to the public, there is a strong motive in a neutrally measuring and alerting device, to be mounted on each and every cellular phone.
It is a common understanding in the international scientific community (ICNIRP, CENELEC, FCC guidelines), that radiation level (power density) should be limited to O.45 mW/cm2. This standard is a general limit used for all kinds of radiating instrumentation (microwaves ovens, cellular towers, radar, transmission stations, cordless phones, radio units …). The limit relates to prolonged exposure (minimum 6 minutes average).
Most cellular phones have a maximum (average) power output of 600 mW at the antenna.
Assuming a circular distribution (Omni directional) from the antenna, the power is distributed evenly on a sphere with a radius equal to the distance from the antenna.

Power Density and Alert Time Vs. Power and Distance from Antenna

Power=600 mW Power=300 mW Power=150 mW Power=75 mW

20 0.12 No 20 0.06 No 20 0.03 No 20 0.015 No
Dark figures exhibit incompliance with the guideline of 0.45 mW/cm2, upto deviations of 10,000%.

Conclusion

The radiation levels from cellulars could exceed the maximum allowed limit up to an operating radius of 10cm, in worst case conditions (continuous 600 mW transmission). However, since the radiation changes according to radio conditions, and accumulates with the call duration, any radius could be made safe with the proper radiation dosimeter, alerting when the accumulated dosage reaches the limit.

Principle of operation

The unit is sensing the electromagnetic field intensity in the spot it is mounted on. It integrates (averages) the field value over time for the last 6 minutes. If the averaged value exceeds the reference value, a buzzer will alert with gentle series of beeps with minimal sound level, as the distance to the ear is so small.
The calculation is based on a conventional phone-ear mode, with antenna to head distance of 5 cm (2 inches). See Radiation Standards for explanations

What is the technical motivation of the product?
Radiation is not constant.
Radiation emitted by cellular phones has been recognized as a potential world-wide health hazard. Although it is commonly believed that the power output of the cellular phone is constant over time, this is not borne by facts.
The power output of the cellphone CHANGES dramatically (from several milliWatts to about 0.6 Watts), with radio conditions, in order to optimize the cellular network and increase the battery life.
Radio conditions depend on the distance of the cellphone from the base antenna and the position of the unit (building, basement, elevator etc.).

How often does it beep?
The unit gives an alert (beep) whenever the accumulated radiation exceeds the set level. The warning depends on the radio conditions during the call (i.e. distance from cell antenna and physical location like: building, basement, elevator etc.).
Therefore, the percentage of calls that will cause an alert beep is very dependent on the locations you are living and working in.
In general, the alert doesn’t start for the first one minute of transmission, and even that, only in 10 to 20% of the locations.

What shall I do when it beeps?
When the unit beeps it is recommended to stop the talk for several minutes. But if the conversation is very important, you can complete the talk quickly, or improve your location and radio conditions, by approaching a window or going out to the open.

How long does the battery last?
The battery life guaranteed for 5 years in normal phone use , as defined in the specifications.

Does it fit all cellphones and systems?
The unit fits all types of cellphones working in the 800 and 900 MHz bands. In some models the location of the unit is different than the normal “top” position , as illustrated in the instruction manual.

Does it absorb radiation?
The unit is measuring the radiation emitted from cellphone and doesn’t absorb it.
However , if you keep terminating all the calls that caused alerts , you probably eliminate 100% of the harmful radiation , making your phone as safe as possible.
Rad-Alert makes your phone much “Greener”.

Can radiation be absorbed?
To the best of our knowledge, there are no devices that really efficiently absorb radiation from cellular phones. Simple logic would suggest that if such a solution was possible , it would have been implemented in all phones long ago.

Will it bother me?
When the unit alerts it sounds a gentle beep. This noise can be heard only if the cellphone is near the ear. In other cases, when hands free devices are used, no noise will be heard.

Is it esthetic?
The unit integrates with the telephone shape, due to its design, flexibility and choice of colors.

How do I test the unit to confirm that it works?
Whenever the cellphone starts transmitting , a short beep will be heard once, and the led will blink shortly every 6 seconds. If the radiation level is very low, the unit goes to sleep after about 20 seconds. To test it again, end the call, wait 30 seconds and try once more. The led is seen best in the dark, and the beep best heard in a quiet room.
In rare cases, the unit will not turn on, because the radiation level is very low, even in the first 2 or 3 seconds of the call (Phones transmit with high power in the beginning of every call, in order to secure the “handshake” to the cell).

What do I need the unit for?
There is no other practical solution. If you are aware and worried from the potential hazard, you should have something that really helps to reduce the amount of radiation you absorb.
Alerting you only when radiation is dangerously high, will prevent most of the exposure, while giving you the pleasure and convenience of using a mobile phone, without any restriction.

Why isn’t a headset safe enough?
There are different opinions on this question. Some very respectable studies claim that headsets “inject” the radiation directly into your inner head and poses a new threat.
In any case, the Rad-Alert will give you peace of mind, and offer the flexibility without wires around and inside you.

I got my cellphone for free, Why should I pay for Rad-Alert?
There are no free lunches !!
Even simple basic cellphones cost about 200$ to the cellular operator, who subsidizes it in order to get you as a new customer.
Cellular accessories are never given free.
